18 Jan Intermodal Transportation | Towards a green future
At Frapont, we are aware of the need to incorporate the values of sustainability in all stages of development of our projects.
For some years now, we have been using Intermodal Transport (a combination of road, rail and sea transport instead of road transport only) for the shipment of materials to the construction site. This solution, enhanced by our in-house logistics department, has brought improvements in shipping efficiency, a reduction in our carbon footprint and a series of notable advantages.
Social benefit
Rail freeways are an answer to the problem of road traffic congestion and offer improved road safety.
Advantages for drivers
By limiting long-distance road journeys, the use of the rail freeway helps to comply with the rules on driving and rest times for drivers. Drivers now cover only short distances to and from switching stations.
Optimization of dispatch times
Journeys from our Barcelona facility to Scandinavia that used to take approximately five days by road have now been converted into 48 hours by train, allowing us to save time and optimize site schedules.
Flexibility
Routes with several daily journeys, including weekends and public holidays, times when road traffic faces restrictions such as crossing France. Both rail and ferry transport minimize unforeseen delays caused by the human factor.
Reduced environmental impact
Not only do we manage to save time, but we also contribute to saving emissions of polluting gases into the atmosphere by transport. In the year 2022 we were able to save 56,370Kg of CO2, representing an increase of 67% with respect to the year 2021.
Example of a route used to send material from Barcelona to Sweden:
- A: Barcelona to Le Boulou (train station in the South of France) : ROAD 160 Km
- B: Le Boulou train station (France) to Bettembourg train station (Luxemburg) : TRAIN 977 Km
- C: Railway station Bettembourg (Luxembourg) to Railway station Rostock (Germany) : TRAIN 820 Km
- D: Train station Rostock (Germany) to Trelleborg (Sweden) / Gedser (Sweden) : BALTIC SEA BOAT
- E: Trelleborg (Sweden) / Gedser (Sweden) to final destination : ROAD
